Casa Del Mundo - Lake Altitlan

Ebby it was your Birthday, happy Birthday Ebby. We hadn't treated Ebs to a night of luxury that was meant for her birthday, so we took the opportunity to stay in La Casa Del Mundo. This is a little Hotel built into the cliffs that surrond Lake Atitlan.
We were lucky enough to get a reservation, unfortunately the only room left was the presidential suite.... and so it was out of our hands, we had to take it (shame).
We only had a night there, but making we got the most bang for our buck we arrived 3 hours before check in and departed 4 hours after being kicked out of our room. On our first day we arrived and had a very tasty early morning lunch before heading down to one of the multiple balconies that overhung the lakes' edge. We thought about hiring a kayak, or taking on one of the many walks that surounded the area, however four hours after lunch we were still baking it up on one of those "multiple balconies that overhung the lakes' edge".
The water was a bit chilly, and extremely deep and clear (despite our solid efforts to get to the bottom didn't even come close) later finding out it was hundreds of metres deep in parts. It did look like an abyss and Ebs was convinced that we were going to stumble across or at the very least be nibbled on by the Latino relation of Nessie.
As you can see from the photo's we had the best view of the lake from our private balcony, and one of the best sunrises of the trip (awoken by a panoramic view of the light coming over the volcanoes from our bed). So all in all it was a pretty sweet way to spend Ebs' very belated birthday pressie, and a really luxurious change from our normal accomodation. From the second photo down you can see our room (the top corner room of the building on the cliff).
Cheers guys,
Richo and Ebs

Hola corazon! It's me, the long-lost May (or Maya, as I prefer to be called when speaking spanish) - it's Kirra, Tristan and Taz and little Alex's mamacita.
I hope that you don't mind my reading your blog - Kristen just showed me. I was trying to translate your Espanol for your family during a fondue night just before Christmas. It was so great to be back in your warm and wonderful house again, your parents look amazing and relaxed and happy. I even got to see Grandma. What a great time we all had.
I wanted to write because I WAS one of those weaving hippies in Panajachel many years ago. Kiko and I drove our van to the Panama Canal and back up again, it took us 8 months and was full of wonder. One of my most spiritual experiences happened in the mountains between Mexico and Lake Atitlan, all-the-while a guerilla war was going on.
But I could go on and on and on about that. I wish I had known that you were taking this epic journey - this intrepid travel - not that it would have made any difference, but I have a sponsored child in Peru - in Cuzco? and a best friend who left America in disgust and relocated to Costa Rica. It doesn't appear to me that you needed any help along the way though so - such is life.
Are you going to 'do' Mexico? If you do, keep San Blas/Santa Cruz in mind. I believe it's known for it's mile long wave - and a rock famously known as Bird Shit Rock. We lived in a palapa on the beach in Santa Cruz for a couple of months every couple of years. I love Mexico - it's where Maya came from. In a plaza in Puerto Vallarta a shaman came to me and told me that he knew that mi madre di mi corazon esta Mexican. Maybe not verbatim, but it was true, I felt that my heart emanated from there. Try Palenque, the ruins - try every little place. Each one is magic.
Have fun, be wise - these memories will stay with your forever and ever and someday will bring this same warm spot to your hearts that your travels have brought to mine.
Vaya con Dios
